The Kia Sportage's interior is designed with drivers in mind and maximized for comfort. It features soft-touch controls and comfortable seating. The dashboard controls, console, and displays are angled ergonomically for the driver. The 2017 Sportage also has expanded cargo space (26.1ft3 in 2016 versus the more spacious 30.65ft3 in 2017), making the vehicle ideal for families, with lots of compartments for interior storage.  Many advanced interior options are not available on the LX, the base model Sportage. The 2017 Sportage offers no shortage of exterior options, designed for convenience and styling. All Sportage trims feature a rear spoiler, roof rails, and power-adjustable outside mirrors. Heated mirrors are available as an optional upgrade on the LX and are standard equipment on the EX and SX. All Sportages also have projector beam headlights (redesigned for the 2017 model year) as well as front fog lights. The SX Turbo features bi-xenon HID projection headlights as standard equipment, which includes dynamic bending light technology (improves cornering visibility) and high-beam assist, which automatically dims high beams to low beams when it detects oncoming traffic. The base model Sportage features 17" alloy wheels and as customers move up the trim levels, the wheel size increases by an inch - the EX has 18" wheels, the SX Turbo is equipped with the 19" version. 

Kia offers two main engine options for the Sportage, one of which is only available on the SX Turbo trim, which is the 2.0L inline 4 cylinder turbocharged engine with 16 valves and a double overhead cam. The other two Sportage trims, the middle of the road EX and base model LX, come standard with the 2.4L inline 4 cylinder engine with 16 valves and a double overhead cam. The 2.4L produces 181HP @6,000RPM and is rated at 175 lb.-ft. torque at 4,000RPM. The turbocharged version, on the other hand, produces 240HP at 6,000RPM (FWD) and produces some impressive low-end torque power at 260lb.-ft. between 1,450RPM and 3,500RPM. All Sportage engines come mated to an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic overdrive transmission with sportmatic, allowing drivers to manually control the gear changes if they wish. 

The 2017 Sportage is built on a steel unibody frame. Its front suspension features struts and a stabilizer bar, whereas its rear end suspension features independent, multi-link, high-performance dampers and a stabilizer bar. It has a 2,000 lb. towing capacity and features 4-wheel disc brakes with an antilock braking system (ABS) featured as standard equipment. All Sportages come standard as front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles, with an all-wheel drive (AWD) transmission available as an upgrade on all Sportage trims, along with an option for a locking center differential, providing low-speed traction in poor road conditions, such as in severe rain or snow. 

The 2017 Sportage is equipped with the latest technological advancements in safety features. All 2017 Kia Sportages are equipped with multiple airbags, including dual front, seat-mounted, and curtain side; a rollover sensor; ABS brake system; rear back-up camera; tire pressure monitoring system; vehicle stability management, helping the driver stabilize the vehicle especially in windy conditions; electronic stability control and traction control, giving the driver more traction and stability in unstable weather conditions; and electronic brake force distribution, in which brake sensors operate to apply the right amount of braking pressure to each wheel when the driver applies the brakes, again improving stability. More advanced technological safety options are not available on the base Sportage model, but are available as optional equipment on the EX and standard equipment on the SX. These advanced features include blind spot detection with lane assist, which audibly and visually alerts the driver if there are other vehicles in a driver's blind spot when they are attempting to change lanes; rear-cross traffic alert, in which sensors located on the rear of the Sportage will detect moving objects approaching either side of the rear of the vehicle, visually and audibly alerting the driver when they are attempting to reverse; lane departure warning, useful for highway driving, which alerts the driver when they are about to veer out of a traffic lane; and autonomous emergency braking, designed to take effect in emergency stopping situations to prevent a forward collision.
