Overview
You will never find anyone who accuses the KIA Optima of being boring or uninspired. For close to a decade now, the Optima is known throughout the industry as one of the best-looking and upscale midsize sedans around. And it doesn't hurt that it comes with an enviously robust warranty. Since KIA kicked off the car's fourth generation of production the year before, the Optima is virtually unchanged for the 2017 model year. This iteration comes is split into five variants: LX, LX 1.6T, EX, SX, and SX Limited.
Interior
The 2017 Optima provides 104.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, as well as 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Thanks to its 60/40 split-folding rear seats, you can expand cargo space from the trunk into the cabin. An 8-way adjustable driver's seat with 2-way lumbar support and a 6-way adjustable passenger seat comprise front seating. Leather upholstery, front-seat and steering-wheel heating capability, and 8-way power adjustability with 4-way power lumbar support and memory system on the driver's seat are added on the EX trim. And if you choose the SX Limited, front seating gets additional cooling capability-with the driver's seat upgraded to 12-way power adjustability and 4-way power lumbar support, and the passenger seat upgraded to 10-way power adjustability with 2-way power lumbar support. At the base level, the 2017 Optima counts cruise control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, steering wheel-mounted controls, and a six-speaker audio system that includes a third-month trial SiriusXM satellite radio subscription and 5-inch touchscreen display among its standard interior amenities. The LX 1.6T gets additional dual-zone automatic control. The EX introduces Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based infotainment control, and a 7-inch touchscreen takes the place of the regular 5-inch display. On the SX and SX Limited, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and a 4.3-inch color LCD screen (which replaces the standard 3.5-liter LCD meter display) make an appearance. The SX Limited is unique in that it has a 10-speaker 630-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system for entertainment. Also, on the SX Limited, the rearview camera is supplanted by a 360-degree camera, which is accompanied by a sensor-based rear park assist system for optimal monitoring when parallel parking or backing out of somewhere.
Exterior
The 2017 KIA Optima's base-level exterior features include low projector-beam headlights, dual side mirrors with power adjustability and turn-signal indicators, and auto light control for turning headlights on or off based on amount of outdoor light. Heating and power folding ability on the mirrors, as well as a hands-free smart trunk, appear on the LX 1.6T. On the EX, LED daytime running accents and high beams appear on the headlights, and LED combination lamps are added to enhance the rear fascia. The SX and SX Limited get a lot more additions or enhancements: dual exhaust, brighter and longer-lasting LED bulbs on the headlights (instead of halogen ones), a rear spoiler and racing-style bumpers, and dynamic bending light technology with auto leveling ability. The SX Limited gets two more additions: a panoramic sunroof on top and high beams on the headlights.
Mechanical
Adopting a front-engine front-wheel-drive layout, the 2017 KIA Optima uses a MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension-complete with a stabilizer bar and high-performance dampers-for curbing road holes and bumps. The SX or SX Limited trims have their suspensions tuned tighter for a firmer ride. Energy-saving motor-driven power steering is standard on the Optima. However, the SX and SX Limited have the electric motor installed on the steering rack instead of the steering column, thus enhancing handling performance.
Powertrain
The 2017 KIA Optima has three engine choices. The Theta GDI-which is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque-goes on the LX. The Gamma G4FJ-a turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 with 176 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque-goes on the LX 1.6T (thus the "1.6T" suffix). And the Theta II-a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque-is installed on the SX and SX Limited. While the LX 1.6T is the only one that comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the other trims get a 6-speed automatic.
Safety
The 2017 KIA Optima's airbag system-a pair of front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags-provide protection in an auto collision. Also standard on the Optima are hill start assist, electronic stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and traction control. Added on the top-level SX Limited are advanced safety features, which consist of blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, smart cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane departure warning.
